"During the fall of my freshman year in high school, our church organist retired. Our pastor knocked on the door and asked me to give it a try (He did inform me that he knew how to turn it on)." Joyce was hooked on church music ever since that time. She directed choirs wherever she lived-St. Cloud, St. Louis, Fairmont, Truman, Istanbul (Turkey) and Saudi Arabia. (Don't tell anyone about Saudi Arabia, Christianity is illegal there)
Her most memorable trip to Choir practice was in Istanbul. The Bosphorus was fogged in and the ferries were not running. She was able to convey, in limited Turkish language, to a small fishing boat the need to cross the Bosphorus. In her words, "the rehearsal must go on"
Her humor, expertise, and talent are only measured with her love for the job and her love for the people she works with at Bethlehem. She makes choir practice a social-type event yet manages to put together quality music for every service or event.
